Statement:  ServeHAITI announces Leadership Change

ServeHAITI announces the resignation of Angela Gilliam as Executive Director, effective December 1, 2020.  Angela will remain on the Board of Directors’ Committee for Education and remains deeply committed to the work of ServeHAITI in Grand-Bois.

Angela will join an organization that we partner with, Meds and Food for Kids, and will realize her life-long dream of serving in her hometown of Cap Haitian, Haiti.  We look forward to continued collaboration with MFK Haiti with Angela at the helm.

During this period of Covid uncertainty and organizational transition, the Board of Directors will assume the responsibility of executive issues, and will draw from our support base to meet our administrative needs.  We will plan to fill Angela’s role in 2021.

Dr. Leopold Florent Bourgouin
Medical Director, St. Vincent de Paul Health Center

Dr. Leo received his M.D. from the University of Haiti in 1996. He undertook additional studies at the University of Montreal and earned a degree in Community Medicine from the Haitian Institute of Community Health. In 1999 he was certified as a specialist in preventative, community, and social medicine by the University of Haiti. In 2013 and 2014, Dr. Leo expanded his knowledge base by taking classes in Water and Sanitation at the Haitian National Directorate of Water Supply and Sanitation (DINEPA).

Dr. Leo began traveling to Grand-Bois in 2001 when, at the age of 29, he saw patients at ServeHAITI’s makeshift clinic at the parish church in St. Pierre. At first, Dr. Leo worked in Grand-Bois 15 days per month, 10 months of the year, as the road from Port-au-Prince to Grand-Bois is too muddy to travel during the rainy season. Since 2006, Dr. Leo has lived at ServeHAITI’s St. Vincent de Paul Health Center where he serves as full-time Medical Director.

Angela Brown Gilliam
Executive Director, ServeHAITI

The ServeHAITI Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Angela Brown Gilliam has been named Executive Director, starting February 2018. Angela comes to the ServeHAITI Team with a background in multi-cultural program management with unique experience in both the start-up and repair of diverse humanitarian, government and non-government projects. Angela has demonstrated goal-oriented leadership in the fields of education, refugee processing, disaster management, and public policy.

As the child of missionaries, Angela grew up in Haiti and is fluent in Haitian Creole, French and Spanish. She graduated from UNC Chapel Hill, and has worked in Haiti, Cuba, Panama, Germany, Syria and the UK. Angela will serve to implement the vision set forth by the ServeHAITI Board of Directors and will oversee day-to-day operations and management for ServeHAITI volunteers and St. Vincent de Paul Health Center staff in Grand-Bois. She will serve as the main public contact and spokesperson for the organization, and is excited about the opportunity to grow and improve the important work of ServeHAITI.
